In a stunning upset at the International G3 Korea Sprint (Dirt 1200m) held at Seoul Racecourse on September 7, 2025, Hong Kong’s Self Improvement, ridden by jockey C.L. Chow, dramatically prevailed over Japan’s overwhelming favorite Chikappa, expertly piloted by Yutaka Take. This thrilling contest saw Self Improvement demonstrate incredible resilience to claim a memorable victory.

Pre-Race Analysis: Japanese Favorites Dominant

Anticipation was high for a dominant Japanese performance, with three of their contenders forming the top betting favorites. Chikappa, a 4-year-old colt partnered with legendary jockey Yutaka Take, was the clear standout, attracting immense support with single-win odds of just 1.8-1. Following closely was Sunrise Hawk, ridden by Kohei Matsuyama, at 2.5-1, and Tagano Beauty with Shu Ishibashi aboard, at 5.0-1. The stage seemed set for a Japanese triumph.

However, a minor disruption occurred pre-race as the second favorite, Sunrise Hawk, proved reluctant to enter the starting gate, requiring the application of blindfolds and causing a brief delay to the much-anticipated Korea Sprint.

The Race Unfolds: A Battle of Grit and Strategy

As the gates burst open, the pace was set early by #11 Super Finish, who charged to the front. Close behind, the eventual winner, #7 Self Improvement, adopted a prominent position in second, showcasing an assertive strategy from the outset.

Japan’s top contender, Chikappa, wisely tracked the leading pack from the outside, maintaining a powerful position from which Yutaka Take could launch a challenge at any moment. Sunrise Hawk settled in mid-division, while Tagano Beauty found herself further back, preparing for a late surge.

Entering the crucial final straight, Chikappa unleashed its expected power, surging confidently to the lead and appearing poised to seal a decisive victory. However, Self Improvement, tenacious on the inside rail, dug deep. Displaying incredible fighting spirit and an unyielding will to win, the Hong Kong raider fiercely battled back against Chikappa, who had momentarily gained the upper hand. In a breathtaking finish, Self Improvement dramatically reclaimed the lead in the dying strides to cross the finish line first, securing an unforgettable G3 victory.

Japan’s dominant favorite Chikappa narrowly missed glory, finishing a valiant second, which meant the hopes for a consecutive Japanese victory in the Korea Sprint were dashed. Self Improvement’s triumph was a remarkable upset, as the Hong Kong contender defied its underdog odds, which stood at 17.0-1 or higher, to claim a truly magnificent international G3 title for Hong Kong racing.
